SCARABEO CAMP, MOROCCO | 2019
There is such a deep peace in my soul whenever I am in the desert. I feel like I am a part of the vastness, as though my being expands far beyond the confines of my physical body and across the dunes.
Sarabeo Camp is less than an hour outside of Marrakech, but a world away.
It’s simple canvas tents are laid spread out across a campsite with multiple areas set up to sit and indulge in the desert views. Fluffy rugs line the tent floors, along with lanterns, vintage suitcases, and other Moroccan treasures.
While we didn’t partake in any of the activities, they offer camel rides and ATV adventures through the sandy hills. We were completely at ease resting in our tent looking out into the distance.
Dinner was accompanied by live music and the full moon. Homemade breads, braised apples, an assortment of vegetables and Moroccan salads were followed by a traditional tagine & mint tea to end, of course.
We sat by the campfire under the bright light of the moon, mesmerized by the spark of the flames and the gentle crackle of the wood splitting in the heat.
It is almost hard for me to put into words how comforting the sense of stillness is. Movement is slow, and the sun is high. But I feel at home.
It was the perfect respite to recharge before spending the next few days back in the Medina of Marrakech.
If you’re planning a trip to Morocco, I would definitely recommend making time to get out of the business of the city and experience the desert lifestyle.
